MAJOR CYCLONE in Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea- How to Track?

A tropical cyclone is defined by a rapidly rotating wind system with a low pressure center.

In recent years due to climate change tropical Cyclone in Bay of Bengal is more frequent than ever. Some examples of these are Cyclone 1999 (super cyclone Odisha ) , Cyclone Fani , Cyclone Aila , Cyclone Bulbul , Cyclone Amphan , Cyclone Tauktae , Cyclone Yaas, Remal Cyclone. These Tropical Cyclone in Bay of Bengal are more dangerous in coastal areas. (Cyclone 1999) the super cyclone took many lives in Odisha. Cyclone Amphan was the most devastating cyclone in Kolkata in recent years which took many lives and uprooted a large number of trees in Sundarban.

Government space agencies like Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) putting great efforts to track wind, pressure and forecast cyclone. Some Cyclone tracker websites give us timely updates of a cyclone. We will discuss that in a later part of the article. First let’s take a look at some major cyclones in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea.

Cyclone in Bay of Bengal :

1.Cyclone Bhola 1970

Date November 13, 1970.

Location of cyclone Bay of Bengal

Highest Speed 240 kilometre per hour or 150 miles per hour.

Death more than 5 lakh.

Damage Caused 90 million US dollar (1970).

Area Affected East Pakistan (Bangladesh).

Notes : Deadliest cyclone Bay of Bengal which took more than 5 lakh lives.

2.Cyclone 1999 Super Cyclone in Odisha.

Name given by NA

Date 4 November 1999.

Location of cyclone Bay of Bengal.

Highest Speed 260 kilometer per hour or 160 miles per hour.

Death 9887

Damage caused 4.44 billion US dollar (1999).

Areas affected  Odisha , West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh,  Thailand , Mayanmar , Bangladesh.

Notes : Cyclone 1999 is also remembered as the nightmare of Odisha.

3.Cyclone Aila

Name given by Maldives

Date May 27, 2009

Location of cyclone Bay of Bengal.

Highest Speed 120km per hour/ 75 miles per hour.

Death 339 

Damage caused 1 billion US dollar (2009).

Areas affected  India(West Bengal, Odisha ) , Bangladesh.

Notes : The first major tropical cyclone Aila , West Bengal and Bangladesh faced in the 21st century.

4.Cyclone Hudhud

Meaning  Woodpecker Bird

Name given by Oman

Date October 14, 2014

Location of cyclone Bay of Bengal.

Highest Speed 215 km per hour/ 130 miles per hour (gusting 260km/h).

Death 124 

Damage caused 3.58 US dollar(2014)

Areas affected Andaman and Nicobar Island, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha Chhattisgarh.

5.Cyclone Titli 

Meaning  Butterfly

Name given by Pakistan

Date October 12, 2018

Location of cyclone Bay of Bengal.

Highest Speed 195 kilometer per hour/ 120 miles per hour.

Death 85 

Damage caused 920 million US dollar (2018).

Areas affected Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Bangladesh.

Recent Cyclone in Bay of Bengal

For the last 2-3 years Bay of Bengal facing frequent Cyclonic storms due to global climate change. 

6.Cyclone Fani 

Meaning  Snake

Name given by Bangladesh

Date 5 May 2019

Location of cyclone Bay of Bengal.

Highest Speed 280 kilometer per hour/175 miles per hour.

Death 89 

Damage caused 8.1 billion US dollar (2019)

Areas affected Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka.

Notes : Certainly cyclone fani was a devastating tropical cyclone bay of bengal witnessed in the 21st century. Although with great preparedness and tireless efforts by the governments, many lives that could have been lost by cyclone fani were saved. But the damage of properties was huge in cyclone fani.

7.Cyclone Bulbul 

Meaning  A bird

Date November 11, 2019

Location of cyclone Bay of Bengal.

Highest Speed 260 kilometer per hour/ 160 miles per hour.

Death 41

Damage caused 3.37 billion US dollar  (2019).

Areas affected Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, eastern states of India, Bangladesh.

Notes : Likewise Fani, cyclone Bulbul was also transformed into a very severe cyclone. But the casualties and damage was less in India as cyclone Bulbul affected eastern parts of the Bay of Bengal.

8.Cyclone Amphan (um-pun)

Location of cyclone Bay of Bengal.

Highest Speed 260 kilometer per hour or 160 miles per hour.

Death 128 

Damage caused 13.7 billion US dollar (2020).

Areas affected West Bengal, Odisha, Andaman Islands , Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan.

Notes : Cyclone Amphan was the costliest on record in the North Indian Ocean. It was the first such devastating cyclone in Kolkata which affected the city worst in the current century.

9.Cyclone Nivar 

Meaning  light

Location of cyclone Bay of Bengal

Highest Speed 130 kilometer per hour or 80 miles per hour.

Death 14

Damage caused 600 million US dollar (2020 ).

Areas affected: Sri Lanka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry.

10.Cyclone Yaas (Yas)

Meaning  Jasmine like tree

Location of cyclone Bay of Bengal

Highest Speed 120 kilometer per hour or 75 miles per hour.

Death 11 reported till date.

Damage caused  more than 3.13 million US dollar (2021).

Areas affected Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand.

Notes : Latest cyclone Bay of Bengal as well as latest cyclone in Kolkata 2021.

11. Remal Cyclone:

Meaning  In Arabian language, Meaning of Remal is Sand.

Highest Speed of cyclone was 100-135 km per Hour

Death More than 84 fatalities reported.

Damage caused  594 million USD

Areas affected West Bengal, North East India, Myanmar, Bangladesh.

Let’s take a look on some recent major cyclones that hit the coastal areas of Arabian Sea.

1.Cyclone Tauktae (Tau-Tae)

Meaning  Highly Vocal Lizard (GEEKO)

Highest Speed 220 kilometer per hour or 140 miles per hour.

Death 174 and 81 missing.

Damage caused 2.1 billion US dollar (2021).

Areas affected: Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Maharashtra of India , Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Notes : Cyclone Tauktae is one of the most devastating cyclone in the Arabian sea in recent times.

2.Cyclone Nisarga 

Meaning  Cosmos

Name given by Bangladesh

Date 4 June 2020

Location of cyclone Arabian Sea

Highest Speed 140 kilometer per hour or 85 miles per hour

Death 6

Damage caused 803 million US dollar (2020)

Areas affected India (Maharashtra)

We know that Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal of Bay of Bengal along with Sundarban Delta of Bangladesh gets mostly affected every year. Through these Cyclone tracker Kolkata, West Bengal can be alert before upcoming cyclone in West Bengal reaches and create a mess of destruction.
